Selling Fees: Vinted vs. Depop

Vinted and Depop both have no selling fees! That’s right, there are no fees to sell your items on either marketplace!

You might be wondering, how do they make money? The answer is a combination of fees charged to buyers and optional promotional fees for sellers.

Both marketplaces charge fees to buyers. When a purchase is made, a small fee is added to the total price paid by the buyer. This fee helps cover operational costs and ensures that the platforms can continue to provide their services without charging sellers directly.

💡 Tip: Be mindful of potential fees paid by buyers when pricing.

In addition to buyer fees, Vinted and Depop offer various promotional tools and features that sellers can purchase to increase the visibility of their items. These optional paid promotions can include features like boosting a listing to appear at the top of search results, highlighting items to attract more attention, or offering bundle discounts to encourage larger purchases. By providing these paid promotional options, Vinted and Depop create additional revenue streams while giving sellers more opportunities to make more sales.

This dual approach of charging buyer fees and offering paid promotions allows both marketplaces to operate sustainably without burdening sellers with direct selling fees. It also encourages a more dynamic and competitive marketplace, where sellers can choose to invest in promotions if they wish to gain an edge in attracting buyers.

💡 Tip: Promotions are worth it on both Depop and Vinted, especially when there are no seller fees.

Overall, the absence of selling fees makes Vinted and Depop attractive platforms for individuals looking to sell their pre-loved items, while the buyer fees and optional promotional features ensure that the platforms can continue to thrive and grow.

Shipping on Vinted vs. Depop

When it comes to shipping on Depop and Vinted, both offer a range of options designed to accommodate sellers’ needs and preferences.

Shipping options are similar on both marketplaces, with both offering integrated shipping (through the marketplace) or custom shipping, personalised to your preferences. Let’s explore how shipping works on Vinted and Depop:

How Does Shipping Work on Depop?

When it comes to shipping on Depop, there are several convenient options, so sellers can choose what works best for them.

Integrated Shipping on Depop

First, there’s Depop’s Integrated Shipping, which is highly convenient. This option allows sellers to purchase and print shipping labels directly from the Depop app, streamlining the shipping process. The main advantage is the ease and efficiency it provides; sellers don’t need to leave the app to arrange shipping, and buyers can track their packages easily.

Another benefit is that sellers do not necessarily need to weigh and measure every package; instead just knowing an estimate to select the appropriate shipping tier.  However, a potential downside is that it might be slightly more expensive than other shipping options, as the rates are set by Depop's partner carriers.

Here are the Depop shipping rates as of June 2024 for Depop pre-paid shipping labels through Evri:

Custom Shipping on Depop

For those who prefer more control over their shipping methods, Depop offers the option to set your own rates through Custom Shipping. Sellers can choose their preferred carriers and services, which can be particularly beneficial for items that require special handling or for providing cheaper shipping options.

The flexibility of custom shipping can lead to cost savings and tailored shipping solutions. This also allows you to select your own carrier, providing more options. However, the downside is that it requires more effort and time from the seller to manually manage the shipping process, including weighing, measuring, purchasing labels, providing tracking information, and arranging drop-offs or collections.

Getting Paid on Depop

On Depop, you’ll get paid within 10 days of delivery.

Getting paid on Depop is a straightforward process thanks to Depop Payments. Once a buyer purchases an item, the payment is processed and held in your Depop balance until you ship the item and the buyer confirms its receipt.

Here’s how it works: After you ship the item, the buyer has up to three days to confirm that they've received it. If the buyer doesn't confirm within this timeframe, Depop automatically releases your funds. Once confirmed, the funds are released from your Depop balance to your linked bank account. This typically takes a few days, depending on your bank's processing times. Note that you do not need to transfer your balance (in fact, you can’t) it happens automatically.

To redeem your balance, you need to have a verified Depop account, which involves linking your bank account or PayPal account for payouts. It's important to ensure that all your account details are accurate.
